if you have an ipod with music that isn't in your itunes, then yes... maybe you've synced your ipod with friends computers and stolen their music for your gratification, in that case, then you'll lose what you don't have on your computer..
if it is all on the computer, then just plug in new ipod, and all the music will appear, magically..
there are other options, but tell us if all your music is on your computer first...

You can transfer your music from your ipod to a new library should you need to.
This is one programme (there are others) http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/0 -
Or if you have a Mac, just use this AppleScript:

yeah musics all on laptop, thing is i find it very confusing i once lost all my music as i clicked on (my name) playlist and pressed sync, thinking my music would go on that playlist but it wiped it all

no its not a mac0 -
if all the music is on your laptop, all you need to do is plug in your new ipod, and then when it is recognised, go into the music tab, and make sure sync all music is selected, and it will all transfer across..
if however, your new ipod is too small for your whole music collection, you can select which playlists you want on the ipod...
