Is there a website that features a student finance calculator anywhere?

My daughter wants has a place at Manchester Uni in sept 2009,

My husband & I are on disability benefits, so we cant contribute much.

How much is she actually entitled to in the way of grants loans etc?

She is talking about deferring for a year & working to save som more money, she has £750 saved up & puts money from her part-time job into her savings account.

I dont know how this works as I never did Uni!

    Any advice, most appreciated

    Thanks

Your daughter will be eligible for a fee lon, a maintenance loan, a maintenance grant and a bursary from the university, giving her an income of about £5,500. As well as this, most students work part time whilst at university and this doesn't affect this income.

Don't worry, I'm sure she'll manage very well, with the help of an occasional food parcel!

The University of Manchester has this webpage of advice for 08/09

    http://www.manchester.ac.uk/undergraduate/funding/home/grants/

It lists the tuition fees for 09 entry on this webpage
    http://www.manchester.ac.uk/undergraduate/fees/

    From the DirectGov website
    Full-time students: applications for 2009/2010

It's not yet possible to apply for the 2009/2010 academic year. Applications are expected to open from mid-February 2009 - when you'll find full details at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance

This next link is about the proposed changes for 09/10 (with info on the maintenance grant) http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/UniversityAndHigherEducation/StudentFinance/DG_172493

Hope that helps a little; another couple of weeks and all will become much clearer.

Thanks, I was looking for help. I don't need negativity! I only wanted to know about going about paying back the money to the loan company and how it works. I didn't need people pointing out that I'm a failure and have been thrown off my course!

I'm sorry that you took my comments amiss but you were getting incorrect information because of your way of phrasing your situation. Whatever words are used, the situation's the same and, personally, I believe in looking facts in the face rather than sugar coating them.

University isn't for everyone, even these days, and there's no reason why you can't go on to a fulfilling and rewarding career without a degree. On the other hand, if you're able to resit a year, I'm sure you'll have learnt from your mistakes. Either way I offer you the very best of luck.
  • Anyone receive anything from Student Loans today?

For some reason they've sent £165 to my account, even though my next lot of grant and loan money isn't due til April and they already sent me money at the beginning of January.
Saving for a house deposit and associated costs:

    £7750/£30000 = 25.83%

  • Dear anyone who can help me,

I was at uni from Sep 1995 until grad 1999 on a 4 year course. As far as I can remember I recieved a loan for each of those academic years.

Since I left Uni I have not acknowledged my debt or paid anything. In fact I have not personally spoken to SLC since 1999.

Is my debt now statute barred? Is it now unenforcable?

If so, how do I go about finding this out?

As they haven't contacted me personally for a longtime it's not affecting me adversely. And I have an excellent credit rating.

I'm just curious as to what the state of it is

Student Loans are never statute barred. They remain enforceable until you die or achieve a certain age. They don't affect your credit rating in general although any arrears will do so and will be collected rigorously and separately from normal repayments.

As you will have been on the old "mortgage style" system you should have been completing deferral forms annually and will have had considerable charges and extra interest added to your arrears.

I hope that you have some money behind you as when they catch up with you, which they will do at some time, you are going to be absolutely screwed. Sorry!
  • Hi, I have repaid my full loan - what is the process for getting deductions stopped? I think i have even overpaid as my new employer deducted too much from my recent pay. How do I challenge this?
    Thanks.

Ok - Thanks for the reply. I'll wait for them to make an effort to find me. I'm guessing they could from the electoral roll? If so, they've not bothered so far - bizarrely enough
