    Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies. :) I know Student Loans are a good deal, and yes, I did save the money - it's just the extremely poor customer service and the extra interest the loan has earned because of that which annoys me!

For most time this was going on the details they had were mothers home address and landline (can't remember offhand if I geve them my mobile number), as I was renting and moved a few times, so it was easier that way. My mum is like me - paper squirrel, and always kept an eye on all the post for me, and opened anything whe felt might be important. Student Loan correspondence obviously came into that category, so I am confident we dealt with things as and when they arrived.

So, what I want to know is:

    - Why did they claim in 2005 they had been trying to contact me about starting repayments but received no response? They obviously weren't trying THAT hard, as we would have had the letters and responded - we don't like letting financial matters slip in our family!

    - Why when I gave them my details in 2005 (and confirmed they had received them) did it take them two and a half YEARS to bother to contact me and tell me my details were not recognised by HMRC?

    - Why when I called them about this was I told no trace could be found of my previous letter I had confirmed they had received? And why did a second employee contradict this statement and find the scanned copy of the letter straight away when I next called them?

    - Why did the SLC never submit my details to HMRC (as as admitted by the second employee) for two and a half years, then tell me the problem was HMRC had not recognised the details, not that they hadn't submitted them? Especially as HMRC confirmed there was no problem with my records.

    - and (most importantly) WHY did they never bother to try and contact me about all this, except for once every couple of years or so? They had a valid address and phone number, for goodness sake!

Honestly, if I took this approact to MY job, I'd be out the door so fast heads would be spinning! But is there even any point in writing again and asking these questions, I wonder? I'd love to know exactly what has been going on behind the scenes, and what they have REALLY been up to with my account...

any extra interest earned on a student loan would be offset by the equivalent savings to pay off the student loan getting a higher interest rate in a banjk...

  • A little question about my student loan.

I'm waiting for my loan to come through, i applied late so didn't have the letter that says i'm getting finance with me at enrolment. the letter came 29th sept 2008. i've not received my loan through yet, but am only kicking up a fuss now to get it because if i did it before i'd have wasted it by now.

the reason i've not received it is because the SLC/SFD say that uni have not informed them i am there. uni say according to them i am fully enrolled. gil today tells me i need to bring a letter in which she will scan... fine.

but on my letter it says my uni is manchester uni, when it is manchester met... and to inform my LEA or education and library board if the info is wrong, which is it.

so i have two questions. when i inform my lea (on wednesday) how long will it take to get the info updated and then me ready to have a letter ready for uni to use to confirm my attendance.

    2. my payment date was due 1st october, my second is due in jan. if i'm not paid my first installment by the time my second one should have been paid, what happens.. i don't get the first installment, or i get both first and second??

    Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm currently earning 18.5k per year and since starting a new job in August, i've had no student loan repayments despite informing my employer. Can i keep quiet or will they expect a rebate from me at the end of the tax year? or something along those lines

Contact Payrolls first, if they do nothing contact SLC. Otherwise you may get into a little trouble.

When did you graduate? If it was this summer then they won't start taking payments until the next financial year, i.e. April 2009. If you graduated in 2007 though I'd get in touch, it'll be very small amounts they take ( 9% over 15k is about £315 a year) but compare it to the hassle if they start chasing you.

I think it's around about May time, but I'm not exactly sure. The catalogue debt won't stop you from getting a student loan, no.
