  • As the awarding agent, they're entitled to request evidence covering the full 5 years. If they see anything 'suspicious' that may warrant further investigation, then they will and can request further evidence but they will only ask for evidence relevant to their ability to assess eligibility and entitlement to funding.

I understand what your friend is aiminh to do, but the best advice I can give them is not to waste time trying to look for evidence that they don't know is necessary, relevant and/or required.

Get the application in now with whatever evidence they have. If it is enough for them to make a decision, let then make the decision. Once it's made appeal that decision. You'll then have a single point of contact in the company that will tell you what they want/need and you can e-mail that evidence to them directly to be reviewed.

It is the most efficient way to approach the situation, otherwise you will be searching indefinitely for evidence that may be needed, or may not and have to go through the process of speaking with their Contact Centres about hypothetical situations on what they may or may not accept in this unique circumstance.

If it comes to it and you exhaust the appeals process and your friend has literally no more evidence to supply, then they should apply as an EU student which is different to what they are doing now, and will still receive Tuition Fee Loan (it is not subject to the same eligibility and residential criteria).

    All the best
  • This is so helpful, thank you very much. I have passed your suggestions on to my friend now, and they will post everything they have ASAP.

Really appreciate the rational and level headed advice!

    Hi

You supply the information to SLC, who then verify it with the Department for Work & Pensions. Although it may be correct, there can be occasions where DWP records are out of sorts, and resultantly tell SLC that the number is wrong. That is why they ask for evidence of your National Insurance Number.

Once they have evidence, they re-send it to DWP and ask them to check again.

If your National Insurance Number is correct, the types of evidence they expect should clearly show your full name and National Insurance Number, so things like:

    P2 Coding Notice from HMRC
    P45
    P60
    Payslip
    (Usually) Any letter from DWP

Whatever you have sent to them before, send again with another piece of evidence to customer_complaints@slc.co.uk, but you should now also have the ability to upload it securely via your online account too.

Clearly outline you are unhappy with the service in as much as you were previously assured your payment would be unblocked once the evidence was processed and that has not happened.

Request that they manually verify your National Insurance Number with DWP.

You should get sorted soon after.

  • We live in Wales and my daughter is going to an English University 2021. I'm confused as to whether she pays for this or does the Welsh assembly pick up the bill?

The quick answer is your daughter pays for it, but she can apply for, and will likely be eligible to receive a Tuition Fee Loan of upto either £9,260 (public) or £6,165 (private).

It is repayable by her once her studies for that course have ended, but she need only repay if she earns above the relevant threshold at that time. The repayment process is, for the most part, automated.
  • OK thanks.  Another issue is for the second year onwards towards her accommodation fees, I'm sure I've read that Welsh students(no matter where they study) get  an allowance that does not have to be paid back. Have I got this right?
  • I think you might be crossing wires if I'm honest.

There is no specific Grant or Bursary intended to go toward accommodation specifically that is provided by the Welsh Government under Student Finance Wales - afraid I can't speak for other funding sourcez or programmes.

You may be thinking of the Welsh Government Learning Grant though which is a grant that most (not nec. All) Welsh students are eligible to receive. This ranges from £1,000 to £10,124 depending on study/living arrangements and the residual household income of the student's parent(s)/guardian(s) or partner.

It is means tested, and while it is a Grant, if it is overpaid in whole or at least in part, your daughter will be liable to repay any parts overpaid.
  • I appreciate your answers and I really need to know a lot more but I'm getting nothing from the school about it.  Where can I look it up specifically for Welsh students?
  • You'll find more information on the Student Finance Wales website.

I've linked below, but chances are it may not work, in which case just search 'SFW new students'
