  • My partner has the required GCSE's, I need my C in maths as I only gained a grade D but was hoping to do that along side the access course. Neither of us have an A level in Music but both have experience as producers, I am also a vocalist and songwriter and have many tracks released as well as national radio play.

I am aware that as a mature student with certain experience you can sometimes get on to a course without the needed qualifications?

It is looking like we may have to study a year at a time, the annoying thing is that we really wanted to both start this september as we are finding it increasingly difficult to find work and felt it was the perfect time to get the education in. I also wanted to aim to have the uni out of the way before my daughter started secondary school.

I am going to look into some more options still and really hope to work something out. Thank you all for the help and advice by the way, it is really appreciated :)

I'd contact Kent and ask them how flexible their entry requirements can be (you're right, they often are for mature students). What they really want to be sure of is that you're going to be able to cope with both the practical and academic parts of the course. Access courses can be fantastic but may not be the best option in this case; see what else they would accept.
    Good luck.

I have been looking at the new 2009-2010 loan/grant application for continuing students and see it is to be based on 2007-2008 tax year again.

I have tried to find out from the student loans company and also my local authority what exactly is planned for the following year (will it continue to be based on household income for a fixed tax year is it going to be permanently two tax years behind?) Neither of them could answer, this makes it very difficult to budget ahead for helping my son who is currently in his first year at uni, and my daughter will be going to uni whilst my son is in his third year.

    Can anyone help?

Hi i was wondering if anyone would be able to direct me as to where do i begin? The thing is i left sixth form 13 years ago. With a few GCSE's and 1 Alevel, i am thinking about starting a course at Uni as my 3 kids are now at school full time.
I am not sure as to how i decide on what course to follow or how i find out which is the one right for me. I feel i have an inkling towards Philosophy, Psychology, Social or Religious subjects.
At the moment i am a full time housewife and my partner works full time. Do i choose something which will help me into employment or do i do something which i will enjoy as i am confused as to what will be my next step. i.e. work or further studies or nothing, as the main motivation for me to go into this line is boredom and because my kids are at full time school i want to do something for myself as i am 31 years old.
I have been looking into entry requirements for uni courses and its mostly 2 Alevels whereas i have only 1, will i have to study for an Alevel beforehand or is there a way around it?
Financially we are coping (thank Goodness) with a mortgage and 3 kids, but i will have difficulty in getting the money together to begin studying again as i am not working. Is there any sort of help available?
I would just like to be pointed in the right direction.

    Hi SLC,

Only those from within the EU. They can get a loan for tuition fees but nothing else. Outside the EU your on your own.
  • HI slc

I am an international student from SOuth Africa. and am obviously paying international fees. The fees are killing me and I;ve already had to defer a year to keep up with money..

I have been living in the uK however for 3 years this october. Being here for 3 years will mean that I am classed as resident...so can I apply for a student loan???

I know its quite wishful - but I am desperate and was hoping you could give me some advice. I realise your initial answer will be no,,, but there must surely be some way that I can try my luck. I am staying here for until I get my british passport and am on a ancestry visa so there is no problem re me leaving the coutnry

    thanks

Unfortunately, any time that you've spent in education doesn't count towards the three year residence requirement. How were you planning to pay your fees when you started the course?

Oldernotwiser, would you mind possibly clearing the odd PM if you have space? Just need to put something to you in that form.
