DVD player - very cheapest? Not last long?

Is it worth buying the very cheapest model about (I've found one at Tesco online for £20).

I don't want to something that will break within a year (or even sooner!). Apart from the waste of money, this isn't good for the environment!

I don't know much about dvd players (a bit behind the times!).
This would be a present for a friend who already has a main dvd player in the living room but was considering a 2nd one for their bedroom (they live in a shared house). I know they don't mind cheap - but as this would be a present from me, if the thing is likely to break soon after purchase, I'd rather buy them an alternative present.

Any advice would be greatly appeciated.

Tesco Direct have two models under £20. I have no direct experience of either, but I am sure either would be fine for what you are asking. They will be covered by a 12 month warranty, so you will get at least a years use from it.

I'm leaning towards the Tesco Direct models.
Seems such a waste to throw things away after just a year... Then again, a colleague's expensive model broke recently after just 2 years so I might as well go cheap!
Wouldn't worry so much if it was for me - but not ideal giving someone a present, which promptly breaks!

    Thanks.

Our experience of cheap models was not good. One Acoustic Solutions and one Goodmands (IIRC) - both failed during the 12-18 month old period, having had very little use.

I personally would go for a known brand, entry level model. You may pay £5-10 more, but the aggravation of getting a new one after such a short time made it worth it for the ones we got as replacements.

Thanks for the advice. This is what worries me with the cheapest models.
I wouldn't mind so much for myself but it is a present.

I'll have a look at the entry level models. Any suggestions?

We got one from Asda (just the cheapest one) about 6 months ago and it works very well! It also has an extremely thin disk tray which looks pretty cool...

I'd look at entry level branded models, too.

Tesco Direct have a Toshiba for under £30.
