Runtime error

Help please.
When I switch my laptop on[XP SP3] a message appears on the screen from'Microsoft Visual C++Runtime Library'
RUNTIME ERROR
Program c:program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe
This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team for more information.

Another box appears saying 'Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I have tried re-booting but the same messages appear.
Any ideas

So you cant boot up the system completely or it doesn't show the task bar etc?

Could be a missing file, virus infection etc.

Have you got any addons to IE installed, toolbars etc? You could try safe mode and disable the addons and reboot normally see if that works.

erm the problem fixed itself, never had that happen. AS hotkee said, virus infection, I would install a decent antivirus, malwarebytes antispyware and run both.
after that comes back clean. I would open the command prompt and type SFC /Scannow note would require your xp sp3 cd in your dvd drive.
would replace any files which where replaced with infected files.
I would also check what you are running at startup, a nice freeware app and small would be autoruns http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
simple to use, removing the tick stops it from loading at the next reboot. reapplying the tick enables. if you do get the above program, and see a whole load of files come up dont worry, just click on the tab LOGON, these are the files which load up at startup with a link to the right saying where the files are being loaded from.
make sure Iexplorer.exe is in c:\program files\internet explorer\, and no where else.
    also check on explorer.exe aswell.
