One thing that may make a difference if it's a 1830 house is that you may need to be careful with the types of materials you use in building works - old houses were not designed to work in the same way as contemporary houses, and so solutions that work for one don't work for the other. You can royally screw up your house by using the wrong materials on it - such as the damp problems caused in our house (apparently) largely by modern paint.

Apart from that, we have no mains gas, and use oil for heating and bottled gas for cooking. We have a village oil co-op so I just send an email to the guy that runs it and oil reappears in the tank at the best rate he can find locally. Gas is just a case of phoning up the gas people and taping a cheque to the empty gas cylindar for them to pick up. And we do have broadband!
