Personal possessions insurance when contents in storage

I'm hoping somebody can help.

I have a Direct Line contents insurance policy with personal possessions cover as a bolt on for my fiances engagement ring. I complete on the sale of my house on Friday 22nd May, but don't move into my new flat until 5th June. In the meantime I am putting my contents into storage and we're staying with friends. To me this sounds like a fairly average situation.

I contacted Direct Line to make sure they covered my contents whilst in storage, and the advisor informed that they did. The policy has been amended to cover the storage.

However, Direct Line have helpfully removed the personal possessions cover for the engagement ring as "all items are away from home so we won't cover the ring". This basically means that as of Friday my fiance will be walking round with an expensive (to us) ring that isn't covered.

Has anybody got any suggestions? I can't believe Direct Line don't cover for a 'grace' period between homes - seems rediculous customer service. I've searched and can't find standalone insurance for the ring, and can't set up a new policy for items in storage that still covers the ring. Short of removing the ring for 2 weeks and putting into storage itself, any ideas??????

HELP!

Try this company http://www.thmarch.co.uk/Jewellery+Insurance/index.xalter they will sell you an annual policy and I doubt they will provide a refund if you want to cancel after two weeks. But if you are desperate for cover then its an option
  • Hmmm. Doesn't look that different to the additional price paid for personal possessions cover anyway. Suppose if I only want 2 weeks cover I could always take out the policy and then cancel on the last day of the cooling off period if every is ok.

    Cheers!

Still annoyed with DL for even having to go through this hassle though.

I did not mention that as I don't agree with it, but it is feasible and very MSE

I would go back to DL and ask for the case to be referred to their technical underwriter. As you say, this is a common enough situation and their response does appear rather daft.

Matty, I've heard of other companies such as L&G having the same approach, they say they cover the contents under the "Contents Temporarily Removed" section and that you can't have personal possessions cover at the same time.

However as you say its well worth them giving DL a ring as they may have been miss advised or may get someone who will agree its covered
