scrapping a car price

I've jsut got a price for scrapping my car of £40 (paid to me).
This include collection and the correct paperwork (certificate of destruction).

Is this a fair price?
My MOT runs out on Friday so I cannot drive the car on a weekend and there are no scrap yards that I can easily get to on a weekday when I'm working, so this is convenient.

I'm not worried about £10 or £20 but am I liekly to get anything significantly better by ringing round and putting myself out (taking time off work).

I was offered £40 for a Clio with me driving it to the yard.

The only way to get more is eBay either the whole thing or in bits.

What car is it and year? Why are you scrapping.....does it have a defect?

Last time we scrapped a car we had to pay £30 to them. So £40 to you sounds good.

A couple of years ago prices of £150-£200 were being paid for scraps.

About 6 months ago I got rid of our Honda Accord for £50, so £40 isn't unreasonable given the fall in the price of scrap metal.

The problem is that we are going to be quite short on time.
It's still being looked at in the garage and it's only legal to drive on Friday.
After that the MOT expires.
We have a private garage and private driveway but I don't really want to get into a posistion where it's illegal to drive it as I know there can sometimes be a price difference between driving it to a scrap yard and getting it collected.

What car is it and year? Why are you scrapping.....does it have a defect?

It's a Subaru Leagcy 1.8 estate.
It's H reg - 19 years old and 140K miles.
We haven't made a definite decision yet as I'm still waiting on information from the garage.
They are looking at 3 problems (exhaust, transmission and power steering).
These are the very obvious ones but it hasn't been MOTed yet.
The transmission problem is serious. To rebuild the gearbox is £400-£500.
I don't know for sure yet, but it looks like it's not economically viable to continue repairing it.

About 9 mnths ago got £60 for a 15 yr old Rover 214 delivered, scrap prices dropped during 2008. Legacy will be heavier so you should get a bit more. Scrap metal dealers as opposed to car breakers will often buy based on weight, if dealer has weighbridge and you can get hold of some free scrap stuff such as old CH rads, old lead pipes, bikes etc - ask anyone who has skip in front of house if you can have the metal - put those in car.
