Just after a few opinions, I need up my skillset and learn 3d animations, and have found the above two software packages.
Any views on which one is best/easiest to use etc?

Max, it's pretty much the standard.0

Not Maya?
It won an Oscar I recall.
As a solid introduction into animation, it's what gets taught on digital animation courses and is prevalent in the games industry, films might be another thing though. You certainly wouldn't be making any mistakes by learning Max though.

Thanks all, Max it is, I will place an order this afternoon. Not exactly cheap at 2.5K but hey ho.0

How are you going to learn it? On it's own it's going to be very daunting, and you'd possibly be better looking into a structured course at a college or university with support. It's a substantial investment for a hobbyhorse.
Just putting it out there..0
