Self Employment impact on benefits?

Hi,

I was made redundant a few weeks ago. I got PILON and statutory minimum for 2 years service.
I have no savings.

I haven't been to the job centre yet to sign on as I thought I'd get a job pretty quickly (IT Project Manager), but I haven't even managed an interview yet and desperation is starting to set in.

My long term partner runs her own shop. She doesn't draw any income from it and is just keeping head above water.

How does this effect my ability to claim any benefits?
She works for herself but doesn't have any income.
The mortgage is in her name only and I paid the bills (when I had income).

Finding it difficult to stay positive at the mo... feels like the walls are closing in.

Thanks
:(

If your partner has no income from self employment - how is she managing to survive? She must be able to get working tax credits.

Go to the jobcentre today - I know its not nice being made redundant but you have to try and get your Stamp paid and some money coming in. If you don't make an appointment then you won't know what benefits you will be able to get. Unfortunately, there is a recession on and jobs are hard to come by at the moment. You also need to register yourself with any agency that specialises in IT work so that you may be able to get something temporary to tide you over.

It is very hard to remain positive when you are in a situation that is beyond your control but you have to take control back for yourself and be proactive and that also means going to the jobcentre to sign on...you have paid taxes all these years so you should be able to get something back.

    Good luck.
