they also do a 500gb and 1tb versions.... mmmmm fw800

That is nice. I think the OP has a unibody MacBook though, so no FireWire ports unfortunately.
Thanks very much for all your reply...

I haven't heard anything about them. I would go for the Toshiba I linked to above, but that's just me.

Macworld rate this one. It's not the biggest, but seems good. We now have 2 of them.

Tesco have a dirt cheap 320 GB drive, that's apparently bus-powered, which is nice.

Is that a disadvantage without a firewire port?if so How do I get one?

Sorry about the silly questions......I dont have much idea about these.

FireWire is just a different way to connect things, invented by Apple.

FireWire 400 is a bit faster than USB 2, and FireWire 800 is a lot faster.

There's no way to add one to your MacBook as far as I know (it used to come on all Apple computers as standard), so it's not really worth worrying about. USB will do you just fine.

I use a Western Digital My Book network drive with my MAC and it seems to hold up well.

Also Airport Extreme supports networked USB drives if you want to expand your network.

This won't apply to you specifically but for those people who have already got an external HD and want to migrate to a MAc then to resolve the problem of mac's not being able to write to a NT partion just use 'NTFS for Mac Os X'. It does cost $39 but may save hours in having to transfer data from one computer, reformat, and then copy it all back. Available at:

    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/

Why Apple haven't incorporated this into Leopard i'll never know! You think they might want to encourage migration from Windows......

You can use the free NTFS-3g driver, which is native in linux, and Macs can use too.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

I have that Toshiba 1TB drive running on my daughter's iMac. It is very good.

On my Macbook Pro (which has firewire) I have an Iomega iGo dual interface portable drive which does my time machine backups. This drive goes with me everywhere my Macbook goes. I also have a Lacie Quadra (bought off eBay for an absolute song) which I have split into two partitions. One is bootable and used for Carbon Copy Clone (which I do about once a week if I can remember) and the other for some of my VirtualBox virtual machines.
