Arthritis, help getting in-out of car

Options
Hi My mother now finds it very difficult getting in and out of my Clio.
Arthritis in knees and spine.
I need to buy another car that would make life easier for her getting in and out.

Was hoping you good people might be able to tell me what models of cars I should be looking at.
Afraid it has got to be a used car, can't afford a new one.

Hope you have lots of good ideas.

The Vauxhall Agila is very easy to get in and out of, and the Suzuki WagonR (same car, different maker's name on it!) My mother-in-law who has mobility probs was thrilled to find she could get in and out easily, though the back seats are slightly higher than the front ones, so your mother may prefer the back ones.

    HTH:)

Try the following link it gives you all the measurements of cars so it will give some idea on the height of the seat or door opening.

I used to find my Smart car was very easy to get in and out of - it's a higher seat than most

Our Honda Jazz is easy to get in and out of; I have similar problems to your Mum, and I can manage this with just the help of my sticks. HTH

if she also has trouble turning, you can also consider using a swivel disc like this (but shop around)

anything where you sit a bit higher is good-my micra seems ok and my former yaris was quite high as well. the mazda demio also got good reviews but was replaced by mazda 2 which may have a different body.

They have got these in H&B for under a tenner, there is a thread here about them.

  • I have arthritus of the spine & found that a Toyota Verso was ideal for getting in & out but found it a bit big as its for 7 passengers but they are bringing a smaller model out or try a Toyota Corolla.

Yes we have a peugeot 307 SW and it's a good height from the ground, much higher than my clio, and a very comfy ride.

The ford focus C-MAX is also recommended in this respect.

Take a look at the Honest John column in Saturday's Telegraph, he quite often answers questions along these lines. (also available on telegraph.co.uk)

EDIT : Just taken a look on his website, he suggests the Nissan Note too.
I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

Rather than spend money on a swivel seat, I use a good quality carrier bag - the ones with the thicker plastic than supermarket ones. Works a treat.
