Moving to a new build this week, how do we get Gas and Electricity (Stupid question?)
Moving to our first house this week and its a new build.
Wondering what the situtation is with supplying gas and electricity? Do we have to call up a company the day we move in and arrange it, and its turned on instantly? Will it be set up and we switch to whoever we want when we move in?
Sorry this may be a stupid question, but its something I just thought about and dont have a clue about being our first home, any help would be appreciated!

Nope they could be with anyone. Hopefully the builders will let you know just phone up the company with your name and meter readings and it will get set up.Gerrard_8_lfc wrote: »Hey mate I think the local distrabutor will be the supplier as it is a new build. The chances are that the utilities will be live and switched on and currently registered to the builders. When you move in,not down the meter reference numbers and the readings. also take a photo of each meter with the daily paper in the view (date). You will then need to sign up to a provider to make the switch to your preferred providers. Speak to the builders for advice/find their current suppliers. also try and find the meterpoint ref nos from them.0

            Hi,
I moved into a new build last year. everything is already switched on, and you will find that your meters will have used quite a bot of electricity and gas. Make sure you take a meter reading and submit it ASAP.
The builder would have had the heating on to dry out the house etc.
They normally already have apponted suppliers, but you are free to start the change process from day 1 if you wish.
I moved into a house in the Scottish Power area, but the builder had appointed Scottish Hydro as the energy provider.
Hope this helps!0 -
Thanks for all the info guys, I will take the readings and change the supplier the day we move in
Can I just ask, if its been used and we were to just leave it how will the company know to bill us?
Also I presume we take the reader meeting from the day we move in to make sure we are only paying for the day we arrive?
Finally skelley who do you mean to submit to?0 -

Because when the builder gets a bill for a period after they sold it they will let the supplier know eventually! Thanks for all the info guys, I will take the readings and change the supplier the day we move in

You take the reading on the day you become responsible (the day you purchase the property) as you may not move in for another 6 months for example.
You need to provide this information to the current supplier of the property.0
