EEEEKKKKK......... Mother-in-Law in Debt....HELP

Hello everyone
I'm pretty sure all the answers are already here but am so spooked I need to ask immediately.
My MIL called me at work today in hysterics. She's c£1800 in O/D, mortgage missed 2 months (that I know of), direct debits have been returned unpaid and to top it all those robbers at Lloyds TSB have skinned her for £138 in unplanned O/D charges, 8 in overdraft interest and £60 in returned Direct debits.......... all on the same day!!
She's a widowed pensioner who has resorted to taking her widow's pension cheque to a cash converter so it doesn't get eaten up in her bank. I am FUMING!
Oh, right, the question(s):
How much does it cost to request bank statements? I don't want to enter into protracted dialogue with the bank when I could cut to the chase and just send the cheque for the statements.
How do I go about getting a very basic bank account for her? She just gets her pension in and a couple of bills out, that's it.
Any help would be so gratefully received.

Hi Fletch
No experience of this I'm afraid, just didn't want to read and run.
Re. the basic bank account, search this forum as I'm sure it's been covered in other discussions. Re. the statements, not sure as I think it can depend on the account. Would your MIL not have copies already, even if unopened and stuffed under the sofa? And the ones who offer paper free are supposed to give you X amount of backdated statements free.
Hope it all works out

Thanks for the response Kas, I appreciate it. Co-op it is then:o
The letter's a bit scary for my needs at the moment actually. I just want to see where it all went wrong for her at the moment. I fully intend to reclaim her charges (I can only imagine how much they've robbed her of). She's old school and finances don't get discussed, let alone debt.
Anyone else know about how much I send. My head is saying a cheque for a quid but I might be getting mixed up with Equifax or somethingGrocery Challenge M: £450/£425.08 A: £400/£.May -£400/£361 June £380/£230 (pages 18 & 27 explain)0 -
Thanks Rosa, I've got one statement out of her, and am thankful I even got that. I've just now heard she has a doorstep collector. Greenwood?Grocery Challenge M: £450/£425.08 A: £400/£.May -£400/£361 June £380/£230 (pages 18 & 27 explain)0

I'd be scared to send that letter at this point in case they asked for the overdraft to be paid immediately. There's no way she can afford that.
I've now done 5 basic mandates to allow me to obtain info from anyone I discover she owes money to. God, what if she has a credit card too? Gee Whizz, am hyper ventilating on her behalf.Grocery Challenge M: £450/£425.08 A: £400/£.May -£400/£361 June £380/£230 (pages 18 & 27 explain)0 -

In the meantime, while sorting out a basic account elsewhere, she doesn't want the situation to get any worse. She should seriously consider cancelling those DDs if they're going to bounce anyway any pay the bills manually. Will stop future charges.
And are you able to loan her enough to stop the unplanned O/D charges too?0
