Replacing Flat Roof On Garage

My garage has started leaking in and I have had a roofer round to look at it and he say's it needs a couple of boards replacing and all the felt needs to be replaced at the cost of £1200! Basically I cannot afford this and I freely admit I am a DIY disaster so do not feel I would do a adequate job myself. Has anyone got any idea's for cheaper alternatives or is this roofer ripping me off? By the way it is a standard single garage.

Sounds a lot to me. Get at least two more quotes and you'll have a better idea what the job should cost. Best to pick someone recommended to you.0 -
This is a lot of money for what you discribe, I had my whole garage roof completely replaced for £1250 and I thought that was expensive( insurance claim). Check your insurance policy for damage done by vandalism ect, ie kids playing up on garage roofs,"Imagination is more Important than knowledge"0

My flat roof on the garage has also started leaking - it has a corrugated metal roof. The only quote I have had so far is for taking off the existing roof and replacing the boarding and corrugated metal - £2500 for similar metal and £4500 for a superior coated metal. I feel this is a bit excessive. Any thoughts please.
Obviously I want a few more quotes before anything is decided.

Can you claim on your insurasnce for flat roofs? I was under the impression you couldn't.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

rayhool you are going to be so robbed if you do that.my whole house is a flat roof!!!! unusual but not that uncommon, now to replace the whole roof of my house costs £1200!!! thatsa house!! with a triple layer felt,You're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on0

I have a double detached garage and it had a flat roof that leaked. I was quoted £2,000 to replace it so I had a pitched roof with tiles fitted instead for £4,000. Looks a lot better and I'm sure has increased the value of the house by at least that much and- hopefully - will never need repairing apart from replacing the odd tile.I'm Glad to be here... At my age I'm glad to be anywhere!!
I'm not losing my hair... I'm getting more head!!0 -
If the roof was damaged in a storm you can claim for the roof on your insurance otherwise you will have to pay for it unless it was vandalised.
As a former roofing estimator I would say the price should be around £900 to £1000, less if the deck only needs minor repairs rather than a full replacement.
This should get you a 10 year material and labour guarantee.
If the quote allows for roof edge protection it is a fair price however a garage is one of those grey areas where a roofing company is unlikely to add roofedge even although it is legally required.
Shop around and make sure you get a polyester reinforced cap sheet as glass based is a waste of time.
If your tight for money buy a brush on coating system and dry the roof and coat it. This is a temporary measure but it will buy you some time to save up.
Hope this helps.0 -
As the post is about 2.5 years old I suspect they may have fixed the roof by now
