Birthday Cards

I'm interested to know, where do people buy there birthday cards?!

I had a load of birthdays coming up all through April. I ended up going into a shop and paying £20 for about 7/8 cards. Its just too much money for cards that get thrown away in like a week or even less. I wondered if anybody has a secret website, or a good ebay seller, or even if people sell their own.

I know that you can get some cheapo cards in celebrations or sometimes down the market, but I'm really looking for some reputable card names. I used to love the Gary Larsen cards but they haven't really bought many new ones out of these that I'm aware. I also am quite partial to the funny black and white cards where there is a black and white picture, with a funny quote below commenting on the picture. Not sure who makes them.

I would like to hear people's opinions all the same.

I've posted on here before about this, but my Missus sells Phoenix cards. Unforunately they are not available to buy from shops, which gives them an edge (In their opinion!). And the cards are £1 each, I'm amazed at the amount people buy!

I'll search out the original thread, where people suggested pondland etc but I like a little bit of quality. Hope that helps.!

Wilkinsons have a very good range which are from 49p upwards. Also worth keeping a look out in charity shops and pound shops.

For anyone who lives near Erdington in the West Midlands, there is a card shop opposite poundland which sells all the branded cards at tiny prices, I paid £3.02 last week for 4 packs of different coloured wrapping paper ( 10 sheets) and 3 mothers day cards.

The tissue paper alone was £1.29 for 8 sheets in partners.

Tescos do some good cards in the value range. I picked one up the other week paid something silly like 29p and it did not look cheap by any means.

They had some other value cards that where bigger and about 70p.

I know you want to get a nice card. But what happens to them after the event. Stuffed in a draw or chucked out.

So is it really worth paying silly amounts for cards. I only tend to keep cards from special people. Or hand made ones as people have taken time to make them.

Birthdays are doing 5 for £1 in my local store and I have seem in mentioned in here before. They are normal quality cards, probably just the ones they are getting rid off. I went to my local store with a list of the years b days and events and got all my cards for far less than I would have if I was to buy them one by one.

I tend to buy my cards at supermarkets as at least I'm going to get my points for them (same with Boots, plus you might get whatever promotion they're doing at the moment, like 'spend £10, get a £5 voucher').

(And if your Tesco/Asda take money-off vouchers, that would make the cards even cheaper! ;))

Also, always keep an eye out for closing down sales, etc. Last year, when Allders were closing down, I got 20 cards for a £1 in their sales! :D

For anyone in Sheffield there is a great shop in Firth Park which a colleague introduced me to last week. They had the "Me To You" bear cards for 50p each, and they are exactly the same as the ones in Birthdays and Clinton Cards selling for £2+, loads of others too so of the really nice hand made kind with bits stuck on (soory thats a really bad description) for less than a pound, I wont be buying from either of the above shops again!

I buy most of mine from The Card Factory they are really good quality and you pay about 99p for a big card, 79p for medium etc.

They also do a range of generic birthday cards for 5 for £1.

If you have a reasonable printer , a program like MS Publisher , Some stiff card that will fit in your printer , envelopes and access to google images you can do some fairly professional looking cards .

We tend to make these for Kid's birthdays. It's a bit fiddly at first printing on both sides and folding correctly but the end results can look really good.
