last thursday in boots i made a transaction for £29. i placed my pin into the machine and it was authorised. howevr right after this the till 'crashed'. the sales assistant told me it hadnt gone through and i had to pay again.
the second transaction has gone through, however the £29 is missing frm my available balance. the £29 hasnt shown up on my statements however so i cant go to boots for a refund, ive been in limbo since thursday as i needed this money, what should i do? can banks (hsbc in this case) do things like chargeback like paypal?

The easiest thing to do would be to call your bank and tell them exactly what you have written above. They can then put a hold on the second payment while they check the transaction.

Hmmm ... I suspect what's happened here is that Boots did a pre-auth against your card.
Basically - they reserved the amount of money they wanted on your card when the transaction was done, but before the transaction was confirmed (and thus the money taken) the till crashed - hence why it had to be put through again.
The result is that Boots have this hold on £29. Now ... how you get around this is another matter. The company I work for are an internet retailer and we do pre-auths for £1 - but we don't actively expire them - we just let them naturally expire after a month. (I'm told expiring pre-auths is a pain in the backside).
HSBC might be able to do something - but without the transaction being processed - I don't know how much they can do.

ok so i called on friday and i got some woman constantly repeating 'nothing i can do until transaction shows up' and wouldnt listen to me
called up just now quoting the pre authorisation thing, and the guy on thep hone tells me they cancel pre authorisations after 7 days if the shop doesnt claim the money! at least i now know i have some money coming thursday, although having it held up for a week was really inconvient as i needed that money! will obviously be complaining to boots.:A Boots Tart :A0 -
