Messing with butter icing

I need to make some butter icing (or something similar) for a chocolate cake. I only have plain chocolate and I'm determined not to go to the shop just to buy milk chocolate as I want a softer taste to the filling.

So, I was wondering, what would happen if I made some and added a dollop of condensed milk? Texture wise, I guess it would be more runny, but I could factor that in, would anything separate/curdle? Would it make it less plain chocolate tasting?

I don't mind how it comes out really - a topping, a filling, a frosting but it seems a waste to buy milk chocolate if plain plus condensed milk (plus the butter and icing sugar) may work.

You can actually use just ordinary milk - it doesn't take a lot to make your chocolate milky. If you have icing sugar you could add some if it gets too runny.

I'm sure the butter and icing sugar will soften the taste anyway. Could you, instead, boil the condensed mik until it turns to caramel and use that in the cake? Mind you, that could take longer than you've got.

    Sorry. You need an expert

If you want a softer tasting filling, why not just make a plain butter cream and add powdered cocoa to your taste. It will be the right consistency for a topping too.

I was a bit impetuous (:o) and chucked it all together anyway :D

It tastes lovely (plus a splash of Spanish cream liqueur from our last holiday ) and is now in the fridge, the chocolate will help it set as well. A lovely MSE'er sent me a big bundle of thorntons single source bars of chocolate because she had no use for it all and so it has Mexican choccy in the filling and French extra dark in the cake.

Jane Asher I aint - but it all tastes the same once it goes in your mouth :D

there's plenty squeaky - I reckon about 16 slices!! It was supposed to be for my cake decorating class tonight but I can't make it as I have too much work on so I thought I'd chuck the topping etc on, then slice and freeze. It's my birthday tomorrow though, so I'll have to have a slice or 3 myself first ;)
