Natural or unfair treatment?

Is it natural to feel so sad at losing a job or have I been unfairly treated? I am currently going through the redundancy process and in the consultaion period. May 4th I was asked into the HR office and was told that my job was at risk of redundancy I was also told that as from today I would be on special leave(as gardening leave) I did nt have time to talk to anyone or say goodbye but was exited out of the building together with a little letter that I was handed during my 10 minute meeting. I was shocked and had'nt seen in coming.

I have worked for the company since they opened 4 years ago as a Training manager. I have trained every person in that sales office which included managers and have trained over 180 people within that time. My letter said that there was no scoring process as I was the only person working in that department. The letter also said that there was no alternative employment available at present. However it was also mentioned verbally that there were two positions that were available one of which was based in Germany however I dont speak German and my German colleagues speak very little english. And the other which was 17k less than my current position. I feel that they are just going through the motions and I have been cast aside.

I had my first meeting that took me into the consultation period one week after being told my job was at risk. I asked in this meeting why they had chosen to use special leave and I was told that it was deemed benefical for me. I explained that I had asked if it was negotiation at the time as I would prefer to work through it and was told that it had been a senior management decision and it was non negotiable. I was told that my position will be re organised within the company. I also asked why I was unable to access my emails and was told that it had been frozen for security reasons. Managers have left before now for disciplinary reasons not out of redundancy but this is the first time that I have heard of emails frozen for this reason.

My consultation period is a joke as there has been no attempt to avoid redundancy. My next meeting will be June 5th when I will recieve my notice I have been told (in lieu) what have I done so wrong to be treated this way. I understand that redundancies can be part of the business world in the current climate but is it natural to feel the way I feel and have they treated me fairly? I am in pieces.

It's natural - more so, if you're female.

Yes it ought to be beneficial. You get paid for not going in to work and you can/should use that time to look for another position, polish up your CV or just pursue other interests. Seriously - it's extra holiday :j
I also asked why I was unable to access my emails and was told that it had been frozen for security reasons.

Quite right - I assume this is your work email? If so, then you have no use for it if you are not at work.

Try not to take this all personally - it's not personal. They're just running a business and doing what they feel is right for the business. More likely, they are doing what they've been advised to do by their employment lawyers! ;)

Sometimes, redundancy is unavoidable - especially in a "one-man" role. Would you have preferred that they "go through the motions" just for the sake of it? Trust me, all those consultation meetings, appeals etc are stressful, farcical and much, much more upsetting. You put your soul on the line only to be told "still no job for you"

Right then - allow yourself some time to wallow in self-pity - truly; it's part of the process and you need to leech it out. Then, get your act together, do your research and negotiate yourself a good pay off and a good reference.

You're good at your job, yes? Well, no-one can take that away from you.

    Think about it ..... ;)

Nowt wrong with that - but I hope one day you won't need reassurance from others and will find it's already there, within you :)

How you feel is always natural - that's why they're called "feelings" - they can't be rationalised most of the time ;) Is it unfair? Well, I tend to think of "life" as a series of challenges we have to get through - life will always deal you something "unfair", but if you can overcome it you truly will be better for it. Then it ceases to be unfair as it's just a challenge that strengthened you :)
