7am car hire drop off at Gerona Airport

I'm wondering if anyone has experiences of dropping off a rental car at Gerona Airport at 7am..?

..there seems to be a distinct lack of information on it at booking sites apart from £46 fees for 'out of hours' drop-off but with no visible Opening Hours to use as a starting point. Some of them mention '24 hours' but I can't imagine anyone sitting up all night waiting for little 'ol me to turn up at the appointed hour. Seems to be plenty of contracts to agree to without this information though.

Seems to have Scam written all over it to me.

  • What usually happens is you are told where to post the keys, often a metal box in the airport. Sometimes just told to lock the keys in the car. I have often had to do either.

    ahh... excellent information inmypocket.. thnx

..so now i'm wondering about the 'surcharges' for 'Out of Hours' mentioned in some Terms & Conditions of a few companies...

..and also, i don't know whether i like the seductive idea of dropping the keys off in a can. If that car gets damaged in the next two or three weeks what's to stop you getting a letter asking you to do your duty and pay for it..? I've never seen nothing about no can in no five page small print car hire contract!

    We got a new invention. It's called " Witness's"

I have the other problem - picking up a car at Girona airport at gone midnight!
Ryanair have decided to change our flight times and we dont get in now until after midnight. Hope we can get a car at that time.

Out of hours fees usually only apply to picking a car up, as there needs to be a person there to do the paperwork etc. it is quite usual to just leave the car, put the keys in a box at the rental desk, leave them on the sun visor, the hire compay will tell you. Obviously there is a possibility of something happening after you have left the car but there is little alternative really.

Auriga Crown charge 20 Euros for pick up between midnight and 08:00, Europcar too. All the rental desks there are open from 8a.m. until midnight, so looks like an out of hours charge for you.

Yes. I suppose a few quick photos with the current local daily newspaper conveniently placed in each photo would do the trick as far as the paintwork is concerned. Just a thought.

..very interesting set of emails from ebookers developing over the last twelve hours.. they now want me to contact one of their Sales Agents on an 08700 number (they wish)

They've strung out a simple one line request for basic information in writing into a "Please be advised.." entry into the 0870 Call Centre Nightmare.

They can dream on unless they email back.

I would be very reluctant to put the keys in the drop-box. I have rented a LOT of cars over the past 20 years and I always make sure that the car is inspect in front of me and I get a signature to say that all is OK and there will be no charges/fees. You may well get stung for some damage excess if you just leave the car and drop the keys. I would do it in Germany or Austria, but definitely not in Spain.

I agree Microstar. I would mention I just found, without much effort, a £16 Car Hire Excess Insurance Cover policy to cover the full weeks rental. Seems reasonable.
