Hello

Just bought a maisonette and the garden 100Ft was completely overgrown with brambles - when I say completely, I mean completely. Builders quoted me to clear the garden, rotavate and lay new turf.

So far, they've had a digger in to remove the brambles, then they have raked over the top and put down weed killer. They have not rotavated it. The builder said, as far as he is concerned the digger rotavated it. Lots of the bramblebush roots are still there - and when you pull on them they are firmly in the ground still. All the other roots, although are damaged are still in the soil. I can't see that putting weed killer down is going to kill off the roots and I envisage that if they don't deal with what is still there, they will just take root again and start growing through the lawn.

Please can you tell me how this should be dealt with properly. The builders have already had the money upfront, so, before they go any further, I want to get them to finish the job properly.

Grateful for advice.

Many thanks
Terri

The knuckle roots need removing. Why use weed killer?
There is a thread about removing brambles if you search on the forum.

We recently bought a bungalow with a 260ft garden, the bottom part around 140ft was completely overgrown with brambles also (been like that for about 15 years according to our neighbour). We tackled them ourselves - and still going. We cut down and burned all the canes, now we are digging out the rootballs and there could be 500 plus to do. The canes will grow back if the root ball is left in the ground, but brambles root from the tip so will only continue to spread if you let the cane tips reach the ground. Brush wood killer will kill the roots weed killer won't, the best thing though is to dig them all out, even if you kill them off with brushwood killer the roots will be dead but still in the lawn. Doesn't sound like the builders are doing a good job.
