Wroclaw anyone?

Left it a bit late to investigate ....

Going to Wroclaw on Friday (yet another didn't know I wanted to go there until Ryanair made it cheap as chips) (actually didn't know it existed!!!!).

Found a few web sites, food looks scrummy, and have got v nice hotel with pool. Anyone got any tips on what to see / what not to see etc?

Will feed back afterwards if anyone else daft enough to be going!

I once spent an afternoon in Wroclaw, wasn't the best place i've ever been but certainly not the worst. The main square is quite nice but it may be a bit nippy for sitting outside people watching at this time of year!

I actually went there the week before last...It's a lovely little place.

There's a very cheap outdoor ice rink if you like ice skating, and there is plenty to keep you occupied for a weekend. If you want touristy things, there are lots of nice churches, and the battle of Raclowice panorama painting is worth a look, IMO.

We had a couple of nice meals - would recommend Mona Lisa's for a really decent meal, and the restaurant under the town hall was also pretty good. Both inexpensive, relative to what you'd pay over here for similar quality food. I also REALLY recommend Cafe de France for coffee and cakes - it's really good, and has a great arty atmosphere - I think it's specified as such in Rough Guide, and it's true!

Are you flying by ryanair from EMA, by any chance? Remember to get your bus tickets before you get on the bus, if that's how you're getting into town.

Went to Wroclaw in 1989/90, so it will have changed dramatically, but the Cathedral was amazing and definately worth a visit. IMHO. Can't wait to see what you made of it.

Thanks for this, sounds good, we're only there for 2 days but will try to fit in your suggestions. Yes, EMA, will make sure get tickets before getting on bus - as soon as we get some currency......

Well, we went armed with all suggestions - but didn't do any of them!

V funny on plane - full of people saying 'where are we going again..... do you know anything about it.... how do you pronounce it...... me too, looking for cheap weekend (was it all you MSE's?????) ..... no, never heard of it either.....'

We had a great weekend - spent wandering round, soaking up atmosphere.

    Impressions:
Old town beautiful - lovely old buildings
New parts - exactly like you imagine communist countries to have been like - large housing blocks, v drab, appears to be communal heating
Place looking tired & dirty - due to snow just melting (still some on ground while we were there) - needed a good rainfall to wash grit etc way
Families generally seem to have only 1 child
    Supermarket sold wigs (!!!!!!)
Food good, & cheap - lot of pickled veg though, wouldn;'t have fancied winter diet in the past!

In summary, we loved it. BUT - beer is very cheap. looks like becoming the new Prague - several groups of lads on flight, heard & seen making an exhibition of themselves both nights. Such a shame if thye spoil it for the rest of Europe - and not good for British reputation - so get out there know & show the Poles we're not all like that!:D
