Accessing Hotmail on my Samsung G600 mobile on Orange

Hello all,
does anyone know anyway I can access my hotmail via my Orange Samsung G600 mobile phone other than simply going on line via the phone's internet browser? The phone menu gives the option of adding email accounts and checking them just like a text message. But I can't get this to work.
It's been suggested that I need to pay hotmail a subscription fee to do this. Is that right?
Both Orange and Samsung have been less than helpful.
