Both of our neighbours have lots of ivy growing up their fence on either side of our garden and we hate the stuff so just keep snipping bits of it off as and when it comes over the fence but it seems to be growing so vigorously at the moment. We really don't want ivy on our fence as we have our own climbers but they are kept under control and we don't want ivy tangled up with our roses and clematis. Is there any easy way of dealing with this please? I do love my garden and plants but really detest ivy.

I know lots of people dont like ivy but its a fantastic wildlife plant.

Countryside Council for Wales say "Ivy is probably one of the most useful plants to have in a wildlife garden, it attracts bees and other insects and its berries are a source of food for birds. It also provides shelter for a range of species"

I thought the only way to get rid of ivy is to kill it by cutting it off at the base. As these aren't your plants all you can do is keep cutting the bits that come over. Or ask the neighbours to cut it back?

  • I hate it too. It grows all along my back fence. It was the cause of it breaking up and now is the only thing holding it together. The trouble is I cant keep it under control. It gets to the ground and then starts growing everywhere. Every year i spend hours trying to rip it out but it still comes back. I have a lovely rhodedendron which is constantly being strangled by it. If you are my neighbour, sorry, I am trying to get rid of it. lol

You can also repress the ivy roots where they come into your garden (though this might be prickly as you mention roses). I dug a whole load up and they all seemed quite shallow so I inset some broken slate bits vertically under the fence to hinder them coming back but not affect deeper rooted plants.

Its quite easy to stop / really slow it down, what you need to do is cut it where you want it to stop and then cut it again about an inch above the first cut. The ivy above the cut will die and after a couple of weeks can simply be pulled off.
