Paypal verification email

I have had an email from paypal warning me that I am nearing £1700 limit and I need to verify my identity and my bank account etc.
I have a premier paypal account, which is verified......so why am I being asked for all this extra identification.
I have done the checks by phone for my bank account and credit card
Now logging on today they are asking for bank statement, proof of tax exempt??? and Organisation and payment information?????
I am a private individual in the process of having a good clear out, so my activity has increased the last few weeks, but I am not sure what to do as some of the information they are requesting is not applicable.

Did the original email contain your name or did it address you as 'Dear Paypal customer'? If the latter, then forward it to spoof@paypal.com. It's a hoax.
Always log on to paypal by going to their site using your web browser; never log on by clicking a link in an email.
If it is genuine then you will have to sort it out with them, directly.0 -
The email addressed me by name, also there were no links within the email. When I logged into my account there was a message there also.0

Did you incorrectly set yourself up originally as non-profit premier? I did and ended up in the same mess. I found the easiest way to resolve it was to telephone them (will require about 40 minutes of your time. 30 minutes on hold, 10 minutes talking), and explain that you're not a non-profit/tax exempt, but just a private individual.
They will instruct you to make some profile changes and fire off an email to another department, and 2 days later your account will be 'fixed'
I won't give you any contact numbers or email addresses for security - get them direct from PayPal having logged in. Starting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j

Thanks will give them a call later. Not sure why this has happened as the account has been up and running since 2003 with no problems.0

I imagine it's because HMRC are targetting people who have set up businesses on EBay but have not declared them to the taxman, so it's just EBay covering their own backsides.0

After about 20 mins on the phone though I got it resolved and after following their instructions they ammended my account there and then.
