Decisions, decisions
Hello all,
I have decided to trade my well loved but 13 year old micra in under the scrappage scheme. Although she just went through her MOT and is going fine, realistically how much longer can she continue - she had a small amount of welding last year to pass and to my mind that's always the beginning of the end.
So I'm looking at an i10. Not fantastic in the EnCAP tests, but reasonable. Certainly at £5k with a five year warranty, it's reasonable. I intend to keep it until it dies. If it does the same years as the micra I will be very happy lol.
Husband says let's go for metallic paint because it will retain its looks better as it ages. Also the ESP option will improve the safety of the car. Sounds good, until I realised that these options move the price up to £5650. Now husband thinks they are worth having, I think that the whole attraction of the i10 and the scrappage scheme is that it's CHEAP and that once you are stuffing on 12% of the cost of the car in options, we're not in Cheapland any more and then I'm kind of losing the benefits of the scheme.
I'd really appreciate your thoughts....

run the micra until it packs up, then trade it in0

Oh no, a car with a new MOT certificate must be a death trap and be classed as an old banger, scrap it now, get it off the roads.
When will people realise that passing the mot shows that their car is legal and isn't a burden on the roads. Fall for the !!!!! spoken by the MPs and scrap your car and save the planet.0 -
keep the micra for another year, wait til the scrappage scheme ends, then go out and haggle and get a car just as cheap or cheaper than with the scrap scheme, then sell your wee micra privately....work permit granted!0

the corrosion on the micras is getting quite bad now.. the panel quality was already dreadful. i remember leaning over the front wing of a K10, peering into the engine bay.. suddenly the whole wing just buckled inwards under my weight! i would hate to be in a prang in one of those...0 -
Buy the basic car, no extra's, just a waste of money, they will add nothing to the long term value of the car.
Or keep the Micra for another year.0 -
My car is nearly 18 and still going strong. Keep the Micra going for a little while longer.0

That's a good age Shoshanna! What is it? Does it have any of the dreaded orange tin worm?0

Don't just leap in & go for the scrappage scheme - the £2000 discount is based on list price & remember as soon as you drive it off the forecourt you've lost 10% - after a year you probably won't have gained anything. Compare the cost with a 1 year old model - you'll have the extras already on it, the initial depreciation hit will have already gone, you'll still have the balance of the manufacturer's warranty etc.
The government pushed this scheme by comparing it to the one in Germany, with one big difference - AFAIK they didn't have to buy new, it was on cars up to one year old. Typical of the UK govt to try & fleece us, in the name of keeping the UK car industry going.0
