Old BT account

I dont know if this should be in another forum so please move if its in the wrong place!

Basically my DF left his old flat last year (June i think it was), he cancelled his BT contract and thought that was that but the other day he bumped into his old landlord who has said shes got loads of BT bills in his name and hes got to go pick them up. So now Im panicking majorly, we are not in a good financial situation atm and if hes been charged since he left then theyre all going to be demands arent they?

He said he phoned and cancelled it but he hasn't got anything in writing left from the flat and cant remember whether he got a cancellation notice at all from them? Im so worried, what do you think they've done about it if it wasn't cancelled properly? Will we be taken to court or anything? Ive checked his credit report and theres nothing at all about BT on there?

Thanks for any advice!

Welcome to the MSE forums jellybeen.

The first thing to say is, "Don't panic!"

Your DF should have received a closing bill/account and, as it's likely he was paying line rental in advance (typically quarterly), what he'd paid in advance may well offset the cost of any calls he made before leaving - and may have resulted in a refund.

It won't help to go into, "What if?" mode. Pick up the mail and open it, put it into date order and work out what is going on/what has gone on.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
