i've noticed recently that my gas and electricty bills are dated 7 may 2009 (southern electric) and yet the reading was supplied on 24 april 2009.
if you looking at the bill you assume like most people the bills runs for a complte or nearest date for a quater billing period.
wrong, it only giving you calculation for the period of days since your last bill.
i've quiried this with southern electric and they say thats how its works.
so you don't really get an accurate reading.
so it can be difficult to calculate your bill for comparision i.e the period of time your reading is for and the cost.
have you had any problems similar and how did you deal with it.

I haven't had a problem with this. Although there might be a delay between the meter reading date and the billing date, it hasn't stopped me comparing quarters from year to year. This is even though I switch once or twice a year. In the last year or two, I've started keeping my own data, reading the meters weekly and submitting the readings to suppliers at the end of every month. Scottish Power are brilliant at this - submitting readings generates a monthly bill which makes comparisons easy. Have switched to EDF for electricity now so not sure how good they are. At least if you keep your own records, whether monthly or quarterly, you'll have the accurate readings you want.0
