which quality memory card for digital camera.

taking delivery tomorrow of my new panasonic dmc-fx9 digi camera .. jessops advertising "wow price £279 " ... i've bought from pixmania at £210 delivered net of quidco cashback.

Aware i need a "sd memory card" ..1gb size should be good.

but when i look at kelkoo etc .. there's various varieties.

i'm looking mainly at sandisk ( let me know if i'm wrong) ...

there is the standard SD card at say £30 ....

then for approx £10 more there is "ULTRA II "

then for approx another £10 there is "EXTREME III"

i'm not a professional photographer.. just normal pics of people / holidays etc .... but believe in spending a bit extra on these sorts of things if i get a better job done during the long life of the product.

Advice please !!

I've just bought a sony camera and went thru the same process as you - I too want to get the best possible results. i read many articles on memory cards and they all basically said that, unless you are a pro photographer with a pro camera, you are unlikely to notice any difference in speeds when it comes to memory cards. You only get the benefit from ultra 2 or ultra 3 if your equipment is capable of writing up to the speed capacity of the card. as i understand it, you are not going to get better quality pics for paying for a faster card. My advice is that, unless you want to count the miliseconds, go for the basic sandisk. lexar, sandisk are mentined as good brands. I used https://www.picstop.co.uk Good prices and great service; ordered 3:55pm thurs, arrived fri am - normal post.

I'd disagree with this. I'm guessing most cameras these days will write as fast enough for the ultra 2 and 3 cards. I had a danelec
card in my camera for 3/4months and it took ages to save the picture to memory. I recently got the Sandisk Ultra2 2gb and that seems to make one hell of a difference.

I would without a doubt recommend the Ultra 2 if your worried about load/save times on your camera and you can stretch your budget a little more.

I suspect for the casual snapper, the standard speed SD card will suffice. However, where high speed cards really make a difference is if you want to take many shots in quick succession. I note that the Panasonic dmc-fx9 can take up to 3 frames per second in continuous shooting mode - if you think you'll be wanting to do this then get a high speed card.
