DLA renewal query

Options
I've just started claiming DLA and know very little about it.

Does anyone know when I might get my DLA renewal come up? I was awarded 12 months from February 2009, I've no idea how far in advance they start the renewal process off

  • Hello Tiger_greeneyes,

The DLA renewal process is automatic, and you will be sent the renewal paperwork 6 months in advance of the renewal date, so around August or early September.

You usually get the renewal forms through 6 months before it's up for renewal so you should get it about August/September time.

Thank you both, it's always nice to know there's something to look forward to ;)

That's made me think of another question - I'm just wondering why they start the process 6 months in advance of the renewal date - it seems a bit excessive. Is there a lot to getting a renewal?

It's exactly the same as the original form. My renewal has just come in. I had a 2 year award first time and this has come in 18 months later. I didnt realise they awarded a 12 month award, I am hoping for a longer one this time but anything will be ok ! I'm terrified mine wont be allowed but nothing has changed at all for me.

It's very stressful isn't it ladybelle :( I've tried to get it before but didn't know that I had to fill in the forms when I was having a bad day. I waited until a good day came along before I felt like doing it - as you do. That's why I lost my appeal, too. I should have been getting DLA for years. I'm already anxious about the renewal.

I started stressing about it as soon as I realised I had just over a year to go. That, I think, must be the sign of a bad system, if the people who are supposed to benefit from it are made to feel worse as a result.

Absolutely, that's just what I was thinking. Stress makes me feel so much worse :(

I got my renewal in on Thursday although I knew it was coming, the sight of it has just turned me into a gibbering wreck. I've planned to spend time on it this morning, quietly and starting to prepare and start to fill it in.
It's so hard to do because it makes me feel all panicky and unsettled and I cant focus and they tell you to do it on a bad day, but just thinking about things can produce symptoms and all day becomes a bad day and on that sort of day I can hardly do anything let alone fill in a life saving form.
The system is so wrong. Why cant they just take it from medical reports ? All genuine people claiming will be seeing people, why do they have to put us through all this time after time when for most people on DLA, nothing will ever change !! so why cant they give it as a lifetime award.
Sorry - off my soapbox now.
