Thanks FC and teachergirl. :T How many should I sow in a pot to have a fighting chance? I'm aware it's very late for toms, so I'm not building up my hopes!!

I've got several other packs of seeds (all veg) that I haven't got room left in my patch or pots to sow. I was going to save them til next year. Should they all go into the bottom of the fridge too, or would they be ok in a drawer somewhere? Thanks again. :A

How many seeds do you have?

If you have a lot then sow two per pot and remove the weaker one.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

I've got some free tubling toms seeds (from the Benecol/Telgraph freebie posted on MSE), which I was planning to pop into a hanging basket. Should I sow the seeds straight into the hanging basket, or inside some pots on a sunny windowsill first?

bring them on on a sunny window cill till they are as big as you can cope with, that will speed it up a fair bit

I've got a pack, which I haven't opened yet, but it feels like there's about a dozen or so inside.

If they take, how many plants would you put inside a hanging basket?

Personally I don't put my seeds in the fridge. They keep just as well in an air tight container. (at least tomato plants certainly do) I agree with FC just to do a few and save some for next year. I think you can put five or six in a small pot and then once they are about an inch and a half high you can seperate them into individual pots. This will save you room on your window sill. If they do take it depends on how big your hanging basket is but I would say about three plants would probably be about right.

  • For tumbling toms one in a smallish container or basket is fine! Put too many in and they will be fighting for nutrients, and as its so late you want to give them the best chance of catching up, although personally I would save the seeds for next year and buy a plant now, as I suspect you will be too late to get fruit - you can give it a go though!!

I put my seeds in the fridge on the advice/instructions of my dad who spent 50 years as a veg grower (for a living) so I trust his judgement on these things, as he used to buy hundreds/thousands of £s worth of seeds at a time!

I planted some of my digg it toms when I got them, but I was lucky to get them about 2 wks ago and they are in the greenhouse. Because they are in the greenhouse hopefully I will be able to keep them going long enough to fruit. I still am holding on to getting a good june july and august.

If you kept the full size plants in big pots you could bring one or all into the house at the end of the season or if you have a greenhouse in there?

Anyway at worst you have wasted a couple of free seeds.

In Morrisons today they had some quite big tom plants for just 79p each. Bought 3 as they were different varieties to the ones I had.

yes i picked up some huge ones for 25p on local stall, they are usually at fetes etc for 25p or 30p I only bother to frow sungold from seed now as so sweet and hard to buy plants but otherwise not worth the compost and time!

Wilko often sell off their plug plants and I've picked up green peppers and chillis for 50p for 4 so not bothered to grow those either.

Hope yours are ok often they catch up if the summer is great!!! Which I hope it will be.
