Does that mean that that person must be in the party travelling?
What if, say, your secretary books you an advance ticket using her company credit card?
btw I'm talking about train tickets

Nope it does not matter at all.
The guard on the train dont look for that its just the name of who booked it so having someone esle,s name at the bottom of ticket does not matter.0 -
None of the advance train tickets I have ever bought have had any name on them.
I suppose it may vary according to where you buy them though.0 -

Agree with regard to the tickets, but - on Virgin Pendolinos and Voyagers at least - I have known the accompanying compulsory seat reservation indicators showing a name as well as 'Reserved'. Not spotted it recently though - these days half the time they don't eve appear to load the seat reservations up anyhow.
And even if there was a name showing, providing you had the corresponding paper reservation ticket it wouldn't matter if the name wasn't yours.0 -
What is a paper reservation ticket? I occasionally get given a bit of till roll with the journey details printed on it, but more often than not I just get the two orange tickets, one for the journey and one for the seat reservation.
I often book tickets for my OH and pay with my own debit card as it is saved on the website. I've never had tickets with anyone's name on. Hope this isn't a new complication they are bringing in - it's complicated enough trying to sort a journey out for the cheapest price!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

The name is only on the ticket if you book online
All it is on the ticket is the name of the person who booked it.
There is no way the train crew would know the name of the person with the ticket anyway.
I would not worry about it as even if you have booked a seat all it has on the seat slip is where the seat is book from and to.0 -
Would echo the above.
Unless you meet a really annoyed guard/gripper and you give him/her a reason to double check the ticket you shouldn't have a problem.
However there is a bye-law which covers this.
21. Unauthorised buying or selling of tickets
(1) Subject to Byelaw 21(4), no person shall sell or buy any ticket.
(2) Subject to Byelaw 21(4), no person shall transfer or receive any unused or partly used ticket, intending that any person shall use it for travelling unless the conditions of use for the ticket specifically permit such transfer.
(3) Subject to Byelaw 21(4), no person shall knowingly use any ticket which has been obtained in breach of Byelaw 21.
(4) The sale or transfer by, or the purchase or receipt from, an authorised person in the course of his duties or from an authorised ticket machine is excepted from the provisions of Byelaw 21.Ex-Employee of a Train Operating Company.

I book online. My name has NEVER been on the ticket or the reservation
So it's not universal.0 -

Same here.
As for the bylaws itemised above, that sounds nonsensical. In fact I can't even work out what it is trying to say. If taken literally, it appears to mean that a husband and wife travelling together would each have to independently book their own ticket. If that was the case, why do online sites ask you how many tickets you require?
I wonder if it is something new being brought in as an anti-terrorist precaution. Can't see how it would make much difference, except that they just might cross-reference it with a database of known terrorists. But if you were one, you're hardly likely to book in your own name are you?I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

In the unlikely event of being asked then just say you are whoever is named on the ticket. How are they going to know otherwise?0 -
