Windows XP Pro - Weird 'connect to wireless network' box (pics included)

In short,

An old toshiba laptop that was damaged, we managed to have it repaired. The guy carrying out the repair noticed it had no wireless card in the laptop, probably not needed back in 2001. Said could fit a newer card for £10, so i said yes.

Today i turn laptop on (ive been away) and its working, but no wireless.

The box on the taskbar lights up like its connected to the internet when the key is put in, but opening up connect to shows is not connected.

Also a box like this comes up..

connect_.jpg

Anyone seen one of these before.?

It's a normal 'Connect to' box - which is your wireless network?

What Service Pack is on this one - looks like an early one

Looks as though yours hasn't been fully set up for your own network yet.

Can you get us a screenshot of your box? Just press the "print screen" button, open paint, press Ctrl + V and save as a jpeg, upload to photobucket, and link.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

Following on from Baldur's post: On your keyboard, press the Flying Windows key together with the Pause Break key and report what is under System and Computer?

It looks as if you need to update your copy of Windows XP to SP3(certainly to a minimum of SP2).

Its XP Pro, without SP1, SP2, or SP3.

Cant download and burn the CD across at the minute, as the DVD drive on this laptop is playing up, and needs to go back for a repair under warranty..

Can do when i get home, will plug straight into the router.

Been throwing up all night, so not alot going on this end. Felt rough yesterday, did not help with 2hr bus ride bobbing up and down, then a 2hr flight bobbing side to side

Sounds as if there is a lot going on at your end. :)

Link to Service Pack 3 is here. Update as soon as possible, preferably before you do anything else.

CD Image file is here, but no use to you if your optical drive is not working.

From memory, SP3 won't install unless SP1 has already been applied - that was certainly the case with a machine that I recently had to restore to its factory default (pre-Sp1) state.
