We found the problem and have now got it sorted - by a work colleague. DD must have accidentally turned the wireless off - a clever trick involving pressing 2 keys at the same time unintentionally.

I wish they had an "are you sure?" popup for such situations.......

anyway thanks to Lum and a couple of other people who suggested it might be that....and no thanks at all to PC World Tech Desk, who you would have thought might think to try that, wouldn't you?

PC World aren't exactly a great employer, they don't pay particularly well, what makes you think any of their tech team with any real clue is going to stay in that job, unless they're still in education or something.

And yes if your wireless kill switch is a key combination it would be quite easy to do it accidentially, and a lot harder to find. I forgot that some laptops did it that way.

Glad you've got it sorted but shame you had to do a factory restore in the process!
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Laptop isn't working wirelessly so you take it back to PC World and they blame a "corrupt disk"...

...THIS PEOPLE...is why you don't goto PC World :)

Knub: Don't forget their ridiculous prices for pretty much everything.

That is also another great piece of information for the MSE forum community :D

I wouldn't urinate on PC World if it were on fire....
  • Here is an example of the wireless switch on a Dell laptop but obviously this doesn't apply to all models.
