silverfish

Hello,

I have silverfish which I believe crawl out of the skirting boards in my toilet and bathroom at night.

I am looking for advice on how best to deal with the problem. I understand they are caused by damp but i cannot see or smell damp anywhere and have tiles on my floor.

What would be the best way to treat the problem? Are there any products out there that you could recommend?

Many thanks in advance

Ant powder, at least it worked for me a few years ago. I've seen a couple this week so the bath panel is off waiting for me to hoover the dust and cobwebs before squirting the powder and refitting the panel. I cant see any damp but DS tends to chuck water about while he's in the bath!

I don't know about damp, but Silverfish definitely live off starch; they're often found in pages of old books and papers, so the chances are that they're eating skin cells (yuck) in the bathroom. We have them in our bathroom and I find a good vacuum round the bathroom usually helps get rid of them for some time.
Our current home is over 100 years old, but we also had them in our last house, which we bought new in 1980, so it obviously isn't just something found in old houses.

I used to have them in a flat I rented, they came from under the sink which definitely was damp. I got some sticky liquid which you would just paint in a line around their 'area' and next day there would be dead ones stuck in it. Unfortunately I can't remember what it was called so this post is utterly useless.

When I was growing up, I had to strip my bed down before getting in it as silverfish would crawl in there :(

I'll second the virtues of ant powder. Used to get silverfish every evening in my bathroom. A rat catcher person advised the use of ant powder. Sprinkle it over the floor next to the walls (I mop off any excess). I did that years ago. Since then I reapplied it once (perhaps twice). It pretty much took care of the problem. I might very occasionally get the odd one but hardly anything, certainly not the daily infestation.

any ant spray- spray all around floor around edges of bathroom once then for about a week you will find them dead each morning then they will go away for a few months then respray floor
dont think its to do with damp as we had a bathrom flood and insurance replaced floor and all woodwork and they still came back!

Hi, thanks for all your replies

I shall give the ant spray a go and see what happens.
