Phone vote rip-off?X factor/BBC Sports Personality

Hi there,
Do you guys and gals think we're being scammed by these programs?
I know the text to vote messages are extortionate anyway (and i don't actually vote on them myself) but I'm sure those who do are being conned (especially children and other vulnerable types too).
For example, each week the presenter of X-factor informs us that it's 'neck-and-neck' in the phone vote right up until closing time (hence prompting people to continue texting even more fervently). Yet we hear the final was won by 5 million votes to 3 million or so!!!!
Also, on the Sports Personality of the year award - we were prompted to continue voting for all the contenders - yet Flintoff's 3rd place trophy was handed to him live in South Africa??? Surely if the phone voting was genuine they wouldn't have known which of the trophies he was sure to get?
Hmm - I don't often have a rant - so this is a rarity! (and i've not even lost any money from it myself!!).
What do you peeps think? Am I just being sceptical? If not - then surely all these people have been spending their text/internet/phone vote money unnecessarily.
