A 500g tub of vitalite(80p) usually lasts the 2 of us about 1-2 weeks. I use it in cooking and baking (pie crusts, roux-style sauces, muffins, cookies etc) as well as using it as a spread.
Owing to financial constraints, the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off until further notice. :(

I noticed that I was going through the Lurpak lighter at a rate of knots, so I switched to Asda's own. It doesn't spread quite as easily from the fridge, so it lasts about twice as long. It tastes fine too. Dh and ds have Anchor butter. A small block lasts them about 2 weeks, and dh has bread and butter with every meal (yes, even pizza!).

theres 4 of us 2a and 2 c but kids are 14/12 so its like 4 adults really

and i go through 1kg spread every 2/3 weeks and i make Twinks hobnobs with that as well

if i didn't make the hob nobs 5 weeks i reckon it would last

and this week i bought x 2 utterly buttley - from morriosns 50p for 500g and i froze one -- i find it freezes really well
  • 250g of lurpak lighter ( can't stand most of the other spreads, far too much cack in them ) lasts me ( just me ) about 2 weeks. I do eat quite a lot of sandwiches/toast. I also buy about 250g butter a month, this is divided between cooking and sandwich/toast use.

  • There are three of us and we go through a 500g tub of olive oil marg every 3-4 weeks (ish). Butter is randomly used - ie for baking etc so sometimes a packet will last for ages and sometimes will be gone in a week.

If you would like to cut down, how about only spreading one side of the sandwich/roll instead of both sides? Or if you are putting chutney/pickler/whatever on the sandwich, there is no need for marg as well (saves money and is better for you...!) hope this helps!
  • Hi, What you need to do is have a look around as most supermarkets have known named brands on offer, buy 500g and hide some in the freezer till the couple in the fridge have almost gone. Because if its anything like the males in my house the open several tubs, jars, milk cartons, juice etc at once. Hth's.

The tip of home made spreadable butter is one of the best I've picked up from MSE. I use own brand butter and liberal quantities (much more than I expected) or sunflower oil in my food processor. Then I pour into a sealed container and put it in the fridge.

It is lovely and lasts a while if made soft enough. And, it's so much cheaper than Lurpak.
