Lost Door Key

i left my house the other day and locked the fron door as normal. upon my return, i discovered i had lost the door key. luckily i had a back door key which got me into the house. i now cannot use the front door. i want to ask if there is any way of getting the lock open and changed without taking the door off the hinges as i first thought.

any help will be greatly appreciated. thanks

What sort of lock is it?

Does your home insurance cover lost keys? if so try contacting them and they might get it all done for you.

is it one of those locks that will lock if you shut the door? i.e. no need lock it when shut? (dead lock) it has a curved face on it?

if so, you can use a thin piece of strong plastic to slide into the curved part to push it open. once oen then simply take out the screws.

I know this as I have locked myself out several times.. for the emergency guy to turn up and pop my door open in no more than 10 seconds. it then takes him ..oooo?!?! 1 minute to write me out the £93 bill!!

I suppose the lesson for us all here is to have more than one key!
  • Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if its a chubb it will be a 5 lever mortice lock which is a deadbolt and no amount a carding will open it trust me. Its also doubtfull you will be able to take the hinges off the door.
