Help with Tesco Car Insurance and cancelling a policy with them

Hi i am looking for some advise.
I cancelled my car insurance with Tesco on 1 May with a direct debit coming out on the 5th, knowing that this would not be able to be stopped, expected that to be taken, however as Tesco charges a cancellation fee of one months premium plus £10 - queried what would happen. The gentleman said that that premium would be taken into consideration and i would be notified before the cancellation fee was taken of how much and when it would be taken.
However to date i have not recieved anything confirming how much the cancellation fee would be nor when it would be taken, until i received a letter from my bank stating that i was overdrawn.
Please tell me if they can do this without notifying me, and if there is anything i can do.
In summary i cancelled my policy with them on the 1 May, a direct debit was taken on the 5th for £36.38 for the monthly premium and then on the 14th a direct debit was taken for £40.77 i assume for the cancellation - but am really angry that first of all i was not told when it would be taken and second that it appears that my premium taken on the 5th was not taken into consideration.
All help and advise greatly received.

If you had not recieved any notice of the DD on the 14th, surely this should be refunded by your bank immediately (direct debit guarantee?) and any charges claimable from Tesco or refundable by the bank.0
