Acer Aspire One/XP/Java Download = Lost wireless

Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows XP. I've just installed Java and now I can't connect to the net....... the wireless icon has disappeared from the sys tray and the wireless on/off switch at the front of the machine is doing nothing.
I've uninstalled the Java again and had to re-install the driver before the wieless would work again.
Went through the process a second time just in case of corruption the first time round...but situation was exactly the same.
Any suggestions how to get Java running without it affecting my wireless?
