Need help edit movie footage shot with digital camera

I shot some quite nice live footage of a wedding last year, on my digital camera (a Canon Powershot A540). Several different moving clips. I should like to stitch together the clips I made in a mini movie for the couple but the problem I have, well one at least, is that I am pretty amateur at this and on a couple of the clips I forgot to turn off the camera at the right point - so there is footage of my feet for example! So I need to be able to edit the clips before I stitch them together. Unfortunately the second problem is that something seems to have been corrupted in the Camera Window software (which came with the camera).
Whever I try to download images and use it I get a C++ run time error and abnormal file termination error message. I have tried cleaning up my registry and reinstalling the software but that still doesn't work. Is there any movie editing sofware out there, not too expensive, that I could use to edit it, rather than spending any longer trying to fix the Canon software. The movie footage is in MVI format.

Hi there,
Im far from an expert,in fact like you Im a novice.
However, the software I downloaded for free was prism video converter, and then if you run it through windows movie maker (also free) you can edit quite easily.
Hope that helps, but im sure somebody with more detailed knowledge will be along soon.

Yup, if you have windows, windows movie maker is a simple and effective way to do exactly what you want.Don't pay off your student loan quicker than you have to.0
