could you not use an xbox 360 on a hd ready tv

Yes you can, the console gives you the option of what resolution to output at in it's settings. They can all be set to output at the lower resolution.

Hi, The new TV will find you. Go to a Panasonic store and look at the models and different sizes. The Pioneers are also very good. Take your favourite DVD's with you and watch them and turn up the volume! Go on, have a good listen, because if you don't like the sound created you will have to find room (and more cash) for a home theatre system. A more expensive screen does have much better sound capabilities built in. Most come with freeview/digital tuners/picture in picture/security built in. Find a 5yr free warranty.

Buy a couple of HDMI gold 1.5m leads or get them thrown in with the deal. Don't pay more than £8-£9 each

Budget for a floor standing unit or expensive wall mount, can be up to £250 depending on taste.

    Sony playstation PS3 support BluRay/HDMI

Go for Plasma better blacks and brighter whites. No blurring. Screen burn less of a problem but does fade away.

LCD Blurring possible and blocky image sometimes. No screen burn. May be better for games players / static screens.

Just to mention LED screens are coming soon too.

Theres lots of good beginner info HERE (look down the left hand menu for bluray info)

And AVforums HERE will let you get as technical and in depth as you want.

Dont rush out and buy the first TV you see, there really is a HUGE difference in picture quality between sets, and expensive doesnt allways mean better.

You need to decide what sort of viewing you want the TV to be at its BEST for.

Some display movies better than sport, others are the other way around.(its all to do with the different way these things are broadcast)

If your a football fan then the wrong tv will get really annoying to watch after a while,(ball smear and stuttering pictures)

If your a movie buff then you want better contrasts and nicer smoother tones.( no sparklies or jaggies showing in your movies.)

Most TV,s have good and bad points and not many are good for ALL types of viewing.

Do a bit of swatting up first and then you will narrow your choice to 3 or 4 sets in your price range.

DO NOT TRUST THE SALES PEOPLE AT CURRIES or comet or dixons....
(they really dont know what they are talking about.)

Bluray is hidef 1080P (Usually, sometimes 720P). A bluray player will play dvds. A dvd player will NOT play bluray discs.
Blurays cost a LOT more than dvds to buy though and a decent tv will 'upscale' (make the dvd picture fit the screen properly) very well anyways
To get the best of either the player needs to be conencted via a HDMI lead
Id recommend at LEAST 2 hdmi inputs. And whatever other inputs you may require for what kit you have now (Scart, Component, Svideo etc)
You dont have to buy a 1080P tv. Mines a 768 tv and it blows most 1080P tvs away for quality.
Dont get caught up in 'contrast ratios' as theyre absolutely meaningless. Ditto 100Hz as many 50Hz screens look fantastic

Heres some reviews to peruse ~

Makes id consider are Sony, Samsung and Panasonic

Personally speaking id buy THIS ~

<since we've got most of the sensible answers already>

    How to choose a TV?

Look through the Daily Telegraph for the last couple of weeks, and choose one that an MP has recently put on their expenses. Bound to be a good one!

(Oh, sorry - of course you won't be able to afford it since you're paying for it yourself...)

Please dont follow this advice, as alienrik said this person clearly knows nothing about TV sets.

Although some of the sets on that link are actually quite good, if you find one you like, enter the part number into the search function on AVforums and you will see what real users are saying about it.

dont be misled into buying on price, some cheaper tvs are great, some are terrible. and the same goes for expensive sets.

its not Brand snobbery, it is a quality of picture thing. Do a little reaserch and you will be much happier in the long run.
