Student loan deductions not made

Commenting on my own post (never a good sign), surely the P46 is just supposed to be for an initial estimate of tax code before the details of past employment catch up? If she had had a P45, it would have shown no repayments and she wouldn't have been asked to answer any questions about her student loan.

Surely, what must happen is that the SLC provides a list of NI numbers that owe student loan repayments to the HMRC, who inform the employer of the need to make deductions. I can't believe the system is reliant on the employee to chase it, otherwise almost no one would be repaying.

I've read with interest the comments above
but I kind of have the OPPOSITE problem
I earned below the limit last year, but will be above it for the current year and so fully expect to pay back some of the loan.
However, how do i RE-CLAIM what they wrongly took last tax year?

    Hi Craig,

You have to write to the Student Loan Company and request a refund.

My partner had this problem (although i wouldn't call it a problem myself). The SLC contacted my partner a number of times trying to tell her to sort it out with payroll, which we ignored. Eventually the SLC did their job and sorted it out themselves and payments started coming out, think it was around 18 months she went without paying.

No back payments were asked for/paid (and why should they be?).

my husband is having a sort of similar issue. Worked for same company for ages. SL contributions were coming out and normal then company outsourced its payroll department and now no deductions have been deducted since March. Income is around 23-25k a year so he is well above threshold. Called SLC and they asked for his employment details this was early april and still nowt deducted. he only has around £600 to go

  • Have just logged on to the SLc repayment site to find that my account has gone up by £500 in the last few days and the site is saying this is my interest calculation up to March 2009.
I have checked my P60 and this confirmes I have paid off £800 in the last year, but this doesnt seem to have been taken into account. By my working, my account should have gone down by a few hundred £, not up.

Cant get hold of SLC to ask why (long time hanging on and no answer). anyone had similar happen to them or got any advice.

My girlfriend's annual statement does NOT show such a charge. Are they saying £50 in addition to the interest?

yea in addition. i dont know how it works out they know they are earning.... but both of them get £50 whacked on each month. and u only get a statement like once a year so ud never know till then!

Odd. But in my GFs case, she's never likely to earn enough to pay it all off, so an extra £50 to the balance each month is irrelevant. I'm surprised that it's lawful for the SLC to add an amount on a regular basis without informing you and trying to chase you for the information. She's never had anything from them other than statements.

All in all, this isn't too much of a concern, though I would be interested in how the SLC justify it. £50 is certainly in the realm of unreasonable charges.
