Faulty goods exchange, no receipt

  • I bought a Phillips MP3 player from Tesco just after Christmas and it does not seem to be working now. I don't have a receipt and I paid cash for it. I don't have a clubcard either. Foolish I know. I have tried to return it but they just told me to contact the manufacturer. Do I have any rights? Can they track the purchase from the serial number on their epos system? If not does anyone have any idea what I can do?
