Every year I try to grow s/p either from seed or shop bought ,but ,when I transplant into the ground they seem to go weak and die ,I tried on a friends allotment last year still not good ,got my own plot this year and would like a fool proof way to grow them, because everyone elses will be perfect.I even grew them in those cardboard pots and toilet rolls ,is it the variety?

I used to have that problem, but I fixed it by always sow sweetpeas in seperate pots and keep them in them till they are about 5" high. When I transplant them at that age they usually take really well.0

This is the first year I've noticed a total slowdown after transplanting Sweet Peas - usually I find they are fine. I brought a pot from Wyevale about 3 weeks ago and planted them into a container with cornflower seeds ... the cornflower seedlings are almost as big as the Sweet Peas now! With that said just yesterday was the first day I've noticed they've picked up and started growing - seems as if the rain we've had has really kicked started them.0

I always plant late, straight into the ground.I've never had much success when I pot grow and then transplant.0

I heard once that with Sweet Peas that when you plant them outdoors, and then after they have settled in, you nip the tops off of them and this causes them to send a fresh shoot out, which is supposedly stronger. I've done this with mine and they seem to be fine at the moment.
Has anyone else heard about doing this?0 -

I've heard about taking the tips off young Sweet Pea plants to encourage side shoots to bush the plant out more therefore resulting in more flowers but can't say creating stronger shoots is something I've heard about before.0 -
