  • We've just taken a small mortgage in order to renovate our house, OH keeps going on about how we have to pay it off as quick as possible and I know he's right (for once). But as I'm a stay-at-home mum I have been thinking, rather selfishly, that I can't really do anything to help.

Well I've seen the light!!!!! This forum has really opened my eyes to what I can do to help. So the store cupboard challenge is on, all coupons I can find are ready for the next supermarket run, and as much Ebaying and Amazoning as I can do!

And last night I bought one of those £500 cash cans on Ebay, the ones you have to open with a can opener and spent the rest of the evening searching out all our spare change, I've £20 (£1 & £2 coins)already to go in my new piggy bank when it arrives, also a huge amount of silver and coppers for bagging up tonight, my Friday nights are a riot!!!

Anyway, thanks to Martin and all of you who contribute to this forum, you've given me the kick up the bum I needed!!!!

Got a very cute pig in TK Maxx this morning ( and did some Xmas shopping). Still haven't thought of a name, but so far he's been fed my 5p collection, the £3 we didn't spend on cappuccinos whilst out and £10 saved on Christmas presents. Long may this last!

Seeing as I didn't have a mortgage (until now) I set up a Bunce account on ING. All Amazon sales go directly in there. Also, I get paid basic, commision, and fluctating bonuses. The bonuses get paid in as soon as I get my pay slip. All the dribs and drabs got me a £700 car four months ago, and I am now up to £250, and earning interest. Cetainly takes the edge of some big expenses.

I definitely agree that this is a great idea. I personally have my trusty quality street bottle that gets fed regularly with loose change. We've not used it to pay into the mortgage but it does get emptied and spent for Xmas pressies. We manage to get a couple of hundred a year, but I'm thinking of getting my daughter in training to save and a plastic saving animal will be on its way to our house very soon!!
