Smiley in MS Word

When typing :) in Microsoft word I get a smiley symbol. I can get rid of it by backspacing but as I touchtype this sometimes gets through unnoticed and is irritating in a formal letter.

Can I stop this occuring and if so how?

Editing: The same thing has happened in this post! If I type a colan followed by a left bracket I get this smiley thing. Urrrrgggghhhh!

    Hi

Go to the Insert menu, hover your mouse over Autotext and select Autotext from the menu that appears.

Click on the AutoCorrect tab. Towards the bottom of the window there is a box which you can scroll down and your smileys should be in there. Single click on the one(s) you wish to delete and click the Delete button.

    Hope this helps!
