Is it a good time to expand a business?

Business is good and a unit's come up next door, thinking of expanding and would appreciate any thoughts :D

  • if you can afford it why not, good to show you are doing well in the current climate and you'll be ready and waiting when things eventually improve

Watch the cash flow as it's going to remain tough to borrow funds over the next couple of years IMO so you can't just expect to borrow your way out of any trouble on that front..

It should be possible to negotiate a good deal right now though so on that basis it's a good time to expand. Buy when everyone else is selling and all that.

If your business is sound and the increased overheads won't cripple you, then go for it. Not all small businesses are suffering, in fact, probably most of the smallest are continuing to thrive. Our accountancy practice are seeing normal levels of start-ups and only 1 or 2 failures so far, with most small business clients saying they are steady. The recession's effects are very polarised - anyone involved in the house/building trade seems to be suffering to varying degrees, as are some shops, but there are plenty of businesses that aren't being hit, such as garages, web designers, some shops, internet retailers, light industry, etc. Smaller businesses are ideally suited to the recession as the owners are generally closer to the suppliers/customers and can "feel" the trends and take action soon enough.

If it were me, instead of expanding the business for a showroom, I'd be making the coffins 50% smaller as "demonstration".... I'd then open a new online business coffinsfordogs.com and coffinsforcats.com as you'd already have the plans.... oh - and a 3rd online business diycoffinplans.com

SRSLY ... might seem a joke at first, but think it through. You don't increase your overheads and you potentially build three more income streams into your business.

A pretty safe business to be in whatever the climate. Would you say you have noticed a difference in trade?? Got to be a bit tacky to try and do a deal with you people
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.
